'parently you can add these dye packets to an alcohol based fuel and end up with either green or red flames.

Re: dye your flames
Thu, September 17, 2009 - 11:51 AMI posted a topic on color-chainging fuel "dyes" on the fire arts education tribe. You should check it out--Tedward provided some very useful information and resources regarding the various ions and alcohol-based fuels. I highly recommend you read up on the subject before you do any experimenting. For instance, certain ion/fuel solutions may take anywhere from several hours to several days before enough of the ions are dissolved to change the color of the flame. I have seen these fuel mixes in action, and they are indeed very cool to witness. I especially like the appearance of green flame. -

Re: dye your flames
Fri, September 18, 2009 - 11:55 AMif you dont have a pair of wicks you plan to dedicate exclusively to color, i wouldnt recommend it. a friend of mine lit up virgin wicks with another friends color dye who neglected to mention that it stains the kevlar. now whenever she burns her fans, midway thru the burn two or three of the wicks turn green without notice while the others stay regular. she cant get the dye out. not to mention the overall life of the wick is dramtically shortened due to the corosive nature of the chemicals. you cant use white gas (well you can but it wont work well) so you need to get ethanol-based fuel which is harder to find and very dangerous to work with. so your choices are to carry another fuel along with your lamp oil or white gas or premix your color fuel which needs to be stored in plastic as it is corrosive to metal. some people make it work but personally its just a whole can of worms that im not too interested in opening. it can look cool but people should take into account how much extra work (and money) it is to get adequate results -

Re: dye your flames
Fri, September 18, 2009 - 12:36 PMAlso:
1) There's a place for everything. Blue sword - Red Sword combat in front of a Star Wars opening: excellent time and place. Spinning green poi in the middle of a show because you have the fuel.... Meh. All green show on St Patricks day - kitchy, but cool.
2) Technically speaking, posting the same material across several tribes is spam. At the very least, irritating because the different postings often go in different directions, and it may be difficult to find the thread you want. -

Re: dye your flames
Tue, September 29, 2009 - 2:59 PMHey now. I didn't post this on every fire tribe on tribe - just the two I belong to. I know some one the other tribe aren't on this tribe and vice versa - So don't sit there and tell me I'm spamming because it wasn't even meant that way. -

Tue, September 29, 2009 - 5:02 PMRelax. That's why I said "technically speaking". This post is on topic and, yes, not posted everywhere, so I doubt anyone's losing sleep over it. But it's still potentially irritating to the hundreds of people that DO belong to both.

Re: dye your flames
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 7:26 AMI've posted this info here as well. I will point out that this is HIGHLY dangerous to you as well as your audience. Make sure if you attempt it you do it in a very well vented space. And maintain at least 20-25' distance between you and your audience. The vapors that come off of the fire heads are very noxious, as well as highly caustic. They can cause chemical burns to the lung tissue.
