HI everyone ! I have a question about what I call "stall" poi...

What this means is poi which, like batons...you can stall mid set to confuse the shit outta people. Ive seen some people use steel cable instead of chains...even saw one guy use bike chains to get this weird slow down stall effect while he was spinning...

what i wanna know is ...what else have people experimented with>? anything people like better than most things...to get that , "I cant tell if theyre spinning batons or chains " feeling?

It's not the chain they are using, it's the precision stopping that makes it look that way. I'm sure that some chains are better for stalling than others, but it's the timing that creates the effect, not the poi.

That's what I've always thought. I'm always getting equipment requests from people who take a short site on the skill people develop to produce the shows they do: Fans with motorized spinning handles (thanks to Grimm, I think); spring staves (after a meteor show, I think); bungee staff (okay, THAT one was real); etc. I even was requested to build these:

for what I can only imagine is the same reason as this request.

I also agree thats it practice and precision. A pretty good stall tutorial can be found on youtube (amongst many) at:

      Hope it helps.

[But the guy in the video doesn't understand the difference between pendulums and stalls, which is really problematic when you're trying to learn real stalls that run parallel to the ground :( ]

There are a number of reasons why torch poi are fun - and not just a lazy cop out. Any of you who've seen Mike Farrel (poispinner.com) on this year's Circles of Light can see some really fun moves that are completely separate from anything poi or staff related. That said, I think spinning torches (club-spinning style) are quite challenging, and I'd recommend them to people interested in that sort of thing ("snakes" (the move not the wick-type) are gorgeous when done well). Using the knob at the end for control gives a lot more grace, fluidity, and move options once the new grips are learned and practiced.

A couple of years ago I was having a lot of fun with some really short torch poi, but I was using them for glowstringer-style string manipulations.

          Oh! I nearly forgot!
Bouncy practice poi are really bad for practicing stalls! The "rebound" factor can prove to be a huge detriment to getting a feel for these moves!

Also, the "can't tell if batons or poi" portion of the original post - is that referring to isolations as well as stalls?

I have a hard time believing that Shoghi is confused about precise stalls. I think he is literally asking for creative ideas like bike chain or poi torches to create a "stall and hang there for 10 seconds" effect. Poki has done this wile spinning torches in such a way that many people thought it was poi until one of them stopped dead and hung upside down for a wile. It was a great gag.

Right, and that's the thing, if you really want to do it right, might as well learn to spin torches and just do it right. Tricky poi could be built, but they'd be kludgy and still have all the limitations of torches. The best answer is to just learn torches and be done with it. Then do a poi show and get all your wraps plus a few stalls to set up the second show, then do a torch routine and replicate the stalls from the poi show, but at the point of stall, let it hang for a few seconds more and blow people's minds.
