thought it might be fun to hear what genres/ bands/ artists people like to flow to....i'll start.

good, tight, dynamic live drumming is top of the list, no doubt.

California Guitar Trio. seriously, check em out, especially y'all guitar affecionados!

Red Hot Chili Peppers!

Thievery Corporation- especially their middle eastern sounding grooves
---middle eastern tabla music in general, but especially when combined with electronica
check out Anoushka Shankar, Ravi's daughter!

Massive Attack

TOOL-- though very difficult, complex rythmically, its almost transcendental.

  • I've been working with Peter Gabriel lately. Trying to learn to convey an emotion and feeling in my spinning rather than being a technical spinner.
Sometimes depending on the mood though, Sonic Sidhe Tribe, Seether, DP, and Mushroomhead! :P

This is a loaded question really I mean I like to spin to anything sometimes nothing. My all time favorite is live drum circles though I have to say hands down. After that I like most any trance or psytrance, also things like infected mushroom, Pendulum, VNV Nation, Daft Punk, Apoptygma Berzerk, Groove Coverage... and the list goes on. Two of my other things are during rain storms go spin in the rain or at the beach listening to the world around me.

        plf in the fucking house.

        also.....

i really love the fact that vnv nation has been mentioned in this thread more than any other band....... sort of surprising really

kanaaal hired ninja dave to do shows, and i heard them while we were fasting/ busking before he ran away to amma chi, great music from what i've heard.

          i can't beleive i didn't list any psy...

infected mushroom, ott, and shpongle for when i'm feeling normal, nice progressive psy that only people who truly suck wouldn't like.

for when i want long hours of zoned out deviance i go to www.touchsamadhi.com and dl their playlists, and also to the dark psy tribe.... but for bands for long zone out psy sessions... juno reactor, and astral projection ( <--- those for a little more oldschool and for darkness --->) penta, and baphomet engine.

justice is fun to spin to, pendulum, i get on my drum and bass kicks..... really love ben sage....... kinda transcendental d and b, my fire spin d and b playlist is a mix of pendulum, enduser, evol intent, ben sage, and black sun empire.

tool went without saying i thought......

          another....

THIS MORN OMINA... download or buy anything by them asap le serpent blanc/le serpent rouge = favorite all time spin music.

other industrial = die form, front line assembly, nin (duh), vnv (duh ^2), and decoded feedback

glad i stumbled upon this thread. now i've got new ideas of things to spin to! gotta branch out from my old standards:
    Lacuna Coil
    Thievery Corp.
    E.S. Posthumus
    Mahala Rai Banda
    VNV Nation
    Juno Reactor
    and occasionally the Skatalites ;)

Mantra Girl, Gypsy Kings, any Ska or jungle beats, and I still love playing to the older 90's house when I'm feeling nostalgic.

The hard... Tool, A perfect Circle, John 5 (Manson guitarist gone solo) and a slew of others.

The soft... Zero 7, Fiona Apple, Pooka

The odd... Mr Bungle, Ozric Tentacle

        The techy... Hybrid, BT, edIT

Only pre-req, it must be progressive. Not like "progressive" house (not prog at ALL) but truly so. Melody, key changes, and superior drum fills are a must. Psy SUCKS! But Juno Reactor is cool. Give me a beat that changes every four measures, and I'm all over it. Stay the course for much beyond that, I'm bored and will stop til something else comes along. Booya.

ok so it's not really music, but it works for me.

i'm still a beginner, so any time i get a chance to spin...i take it. last night i was watching jesus christ superstar, and while i've seen it a million times and heard the music forever, i never thought of it as music to spin to. when "heaven on their minds" came on, i had to get up and start spinning. it's perfect. there are times when i could spin large circles and then down to small ones...big butterflies to small ones. i got a lot of practice in. it was great.

check it out when you have a minute. you'll hopefully see what i mean youtube.com/watch

ooh, i love hearing about what other people are grooving to! anyone up for a mixed CD exchange project? :D

lately i've been spinning to Girl Talk - really fun mash-up type DJ. he switches up beats and tempos, so it's good exercise for speed changes. my favorite is any sort of middle eastern/desi music, particularly with a strong bass line/beat and when fused with electronica.

    usual favorites include:
    Bassnectar (always, always Bassnectar. <3.)
    Yelle
    M.I.A.
    Thievery Corp.
    Gabriel & Dresden
    Muse
    Motion City Soundtrack
    Jurassic 5
    Blackstar
    TTC
    Tribe Called Quest

    so much more...

dude, how do you spin to JAZZ?! i mean, old school stuff like that i can see LISTENING to, but....

couldn't resist. we'll be spinning saturday at an event here at a music store our friends run. they had to give us a slot-between the bands!- because they always have jazz musicians!

i've decided that Jazz is to music what "tech" is to poi....

but hell yeah on industrial! NIN has some great spinning music (i've done a couple vids to them)

i've got Pangea around here somewhere... i should go put it on and see how it flows...

Djembe drumming live!! There is a group of spinners and drummers that get together in a park that overlooks the Hudson river in Albany NY, every tuesday. When the drummers and the poi spinning feed off of one another, it is an amazing experience!!!

Whereas I love VNV Nation, Crux Shadows, and generally rhythmically sound, solid tunes. By this I mean things that are 4/4, 8/8 rhythms that you can easily count along to or cook up choreographies. I'm not much of a technical fire spinner. Ally + tying to do Triquertas = hilarious. I'm mostly a voi spinner so I love slow, passionate music. Right now I'm choreographing to "Yearning" by Raul Ferrando.

Check out the album Shimmer Sustain by Maduro for those of you who love Middle Eastern beats.
