Handles for poi throwing?

topic posted Wed, March 12, 2008 - 6:54 PM by  Drex
Hey, all-

I've been playing around with throws a lot lately and finding (surprise, surprise) that standard strap handles on poi can be pretty difficult to catch, especially in the dark. I've been looking around on Home of Poi and Flama Aeterna at their handle options--Home of Poi's wood ball handles remind me of the doll heads that were recommended to me when I started playing around with throws, but I wonder how slippery the grips will wind up being. Flama Aeterna's rubber-covered handles seem easier to hold onto, but their slim profile makes me wonder if they wouldn't be as difficult to catch as straps. Has anyone out there had any experience with either type and have some words of wisdom to share?

Thanx,
Drex

Im assuming you are referring to the handles for your wicks... What I like doing is going to the hardware store and getting a fairly hefty 1 inch ring (i think thats the size.. Lowes carries them around here in the same section as their rope and chain) and then making a handle on that. sometimes I'll hook another one of those rings on the quicklink for extra weight. There are a ton different methods that people like but this is my favorite so far. i find that i like the drag from the handle and the little bit of extra room to catch (and the fact that its fairly soft) I use golf balls in my socks as counterweights so I figured that id like the ball handles but I've tried them and I'm not a big fan of them personally.

    hope that helps. haha.

    peace and love,

    Hi Drex,

We developed the weighted grips with the help of Alien Jon (some people over here call them the Alien Grips). I think he is currently using them, though I think the design will eventually go toward something molded. We wanted something that people could change the weight of based upon the weight of their poi or the type of spin they wanted. The handles are designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand during a catch and the chain is held directly with the fingers. I think you will tend to catch a little in front of the handle, and it will then slide into place in your palm. At least, that is how it works for me. I'm sure he would not mind a PM to ask how they work for him.

one style that cropped up around here is the small tennis balls, which are sold as dog chew toys. I got mine at wal-mart (i know, i know) but i'm sure other places carry them as well. Then just punch a couple holes in it, run para cord through it, and tie it on. The ones on my socks just have one wide slit that i pushed the knot of the sock through, and my fire set use paracord, but one of the holes for the cord is actually a slot wide enough to push pennies through, so you can alter the weight.

Benes: Cheap, easy to make, weight adjustable, soft, and super grippy.
Cons: They are bright yellow tennis balls, and are easily recognizable. Perhaps they don't look so professional... not sure how hard it would be to paint/dye them.

The design I've made up for a few people who do release moves is dead simple. About a 12" length of curb chain (dog-leash chain), inside a silicone tube, held together at the ends with a quick-link. The chain gives strength and a bit of weight to counter the wick; the silicone acts as a spring to hold the loop open and is extremely grippy, making it easier to grab. If you wanted to get fancy, you could get a tiny length of EL wire and run it inside the tube for visibility.
