Ive been told that i need to move more when I spin. I got into tech spinning and i want to be able to incorporate dance and movement into my spinning. Any suggestions on a style of dance i should learn?

Tue, February 26, 2008 - 9:22 AMWhatever makes you feel good! Play music you love, start dancing to it as you normally would, and see what you can do with the poi. Focus on turns, changing from forward to reverse... whatever comes natural. Don't worry about any tricks or complicated moves, or a particular style of dance... just play with moving your body in whatever way feels best and letting your poi flow with you.

Tue, February 26, 2008 - 10:59 AMgo to some sort of hippy festival and watch the hippies dance.
then DONT DO THAT! :)
just do whatever feels good. I always thought it'd be fun to see someone spin techy poi while doing pop and lock stuff, but im pretty sure it takes a long time to learn. -

Tue, February 26, 2008 - 11:14 AMDon't overthink it.
My two cents:
Think less about dance and more about what you would want to see in a performance and then make it happen
But that will help you choose a direction to go in.
hope that helps

Re: advice needed.
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 11:49 AMwell what i do now mostly involves how the patterns look. what shapes i present to the audience, not how i move i guess (which i guess is kinda boring).
moving more is the advise ive been given A LOT lately.. so im just seeking a way to remedy that. otherwise the only shows id be good for are ones that are on pillars haha.

Re: advice needed.
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 8:04 AMI asked the same question of a friend who studies dance a year ago and he recommended West African dance, though my feeling at this point was not that it was perfectly suited to poi, but that he was interested in seeing what would happen by combining the two styles. I've seen a poi spinner in Colorado with a background in ballet do some beautiful moves that combine the forms and most glowstickers I've seen incorporate some elements of hip-hop dancing into their moves.
Try finding a local dance studio that teaches a variety of styles and try out each of their classes--see what clicks and what inspires you to go home and try the moves with poi. Then I'd say you've got a good match. -

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:27 AMHave you ever considerd martial art's?Thats what I use now. I could'nt find a form of dance that fit me so to speak.
So I started taking martial art classes. Not only did it help me move, but I also learned fire combat. Which is really fun!
I also learned more fire props like swords, staff ,nunchuck's,and rope dart .

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:32 AMthat's really cool! Specifically which martial arts? -

Re: advice needed.
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 10:41 AMThe newer arts, Wushu, Capoera, etc tend to be better for performance. The more direct combat arts (bushido, karate, judo) tend to be a little lackluster for performance value.

Tue, March 4, 2008 - 1:24 PMI would recomend Kali/Escrima or maybe even Kendo,Wushu is very nice to but the Kung Fu arts are really difficult to get some one to teach you wepons without having to go through years of training first. -

Sat, March 8, 2008 - 7:20 PMNice moves :)
I agree with everything Dusty said
IMO crossers and any moves that have your arms behind your back make dancing difficult..
get some music that gets your heart rate up. (Ministry 's Jesus built my Hotrod should do it)
alternate between
- moving your feet to new spots while your upper body doesnt do much
- planting your legs firmly in one spot and doing something cool with your upper body - lean from the waist - like bamboo in a wind storm
- crouch down or stretch up
instead of having the poi move at your side while you stay facing front, turn your body as your poi moves around you
and remember to move your head (it unlocks movement for the rest of your body)
I suggest songs that let you alter the tempo you spin at also.
Plus - Don't be afraid to look retarded. Check yourself in a mirror every so often and just go crazy. :-) -

Re: advice needed.
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:12 PMAny form of dance will be useful in expanding your style as a fire dancer. People have a some forms they prefer (martial arts is a common favorite) but really anything can be incorporated and blended.
I agree with Drex, I recommend sampling different classes until you develop a sense of what movement style feels natural to you, then expand on that.

Personally I like the acrobatic, level changing, martial arts, illusionary, sort of movements (to list a few), but that's just me. You may find something else which looks good for your style.
Just take any dance class. Any movement class. Anything that will make you comfortable with freedom of motion.

Tue, March 4, 2008 - 10:32 AMMy husband incorporates alot of MArtial Arts, while I incorporate a combo of ballet and belly dancing...I've also taken Japanese Fan dancing...
Now my daughter does this wierd hip hop thing...but she's 12 and been spinning since she was 5 so we just figure it's her own way...
