Hello there! Some friends and I have recently formed a fire dancing troupe, but we'd like to get into some glow toy dancing as well, for versatility's sake. One of our members is keen to make a certain kind of toy - I think it looks like fireflies, personally, but I can't seem to find out what they are called, where to buy them, or how to make them (we have the technology). Do any of you fine folks know what they are called, or have any leads?
Here's some video:

Thanks in advance!

Re: LED toy questions
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 7:19 PMDid you see this in the youtube comments:
"It is a custom-made LED glow toy. Basically, the battery pack is harnessed in the grip and the wire runs up a spring to a LED at the end. Each grip has about 10 wires attached, and Zarah is using a grip in each hand."
Good luck,

Re: LED toy questions
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 8:39 PMI was hoping this nifty gadget had a name so I could search for a more detailed tutorial - or at least a photo. Thanks for your help, though! If anyone else knows, I'd be much obliged. -

Re: LED toy questions
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 12:01 AMWell if you are going to build them yourself you could start with something like this:
cgi.ebay.com/NEW-IKEA-BA...aultDomain_0
These are on ebay but Ikea sells them for $1.99 each when they are in stock. It's probably easier than starting from scratch.
You would need to add the wires and some type of little bulb shade at the end because LED only shine straight out the front and to see them from the side you need a diffuser of some sort.
I also found these LED Gloves - you could dissect it and extend the LEDs with longer wires and the spring wire fingers. Not exactly easy but it could be done:
cgi.ebay.com/LED-Gloves-...aultDomain_0
Or, you could write to someplace like Noise Bridge, a non-profit hacker space and see if someone there will build you a pair for a set price:
www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Noisebridge
I'm sure someone there would be interested.
Or find someone local to you that would be interested in making them - put a post up at your local college in the EE department. It might be something others would be interested in buying too. Or maybe try Craigs list or ?
Or I think there is a electronics tribe where folks could help you figure it out on you own if your handy.
Here is a short tutorial on LEDs:

There's a ton of other LED stuff on the web as well.
Good luck,
D

Re: LED toy questions
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 2:02 PMI could easily make some of these for you, the LEDs are cheap and wiring them not a problem- the 2 challenges I see are:
*the springs- what kind, how to get that many for cheap. Maybe screen-door type springs?
*The attachment of the springs to the grips- where all the tension will be.
Anyone out there know a source for cheap, stiff steel springs like this? or another idea for stiff but springy flexible tubes? -

Re: LED toy questions
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 2:29 PMWhat about long spring steel wire? With a little weight at the end it might simulate a spring in movement.
