I am going to make some Ribbon POI or something along the lines of ribbon poi. (ribbon seems alittle girly to me) My belly dance partner and I are going to do a set and spin with it. We can’t use fire since it’s in doors and during the day.

Any ideas.... it does not need to be Ribbon but I want it to look really cool.

Thank you

  • you can get UV reactive streamers that look pretty nice with a blacklight and the lights turned down...
    • Know where I can find some?
      • Hi Im new to this group but you will be seeing lots of me. Some of the coolest colors I have seen are at sonicpoi.com
Good luck. You should almost just look for fabric that glows and make your own streamers/tails.
        • Thats the plan to make my own... just didnt know what would work best! =) Thank you!
          • Hola! Well, our performance troop, Soul Fire Tribe, use these very cool sandbag/ribbon poi for our beginning students. We get them at mystik toyz on line, but you could easily make them. They are made of two different bright colors of rip-stop nylon. One color, of a heavier grade of nylon, is for a bean bag (which is a great choice to learn with, much better than tennis balls-on-a-string because they don't hurt, much, when they hit you in the face! Plus, they're easy to attach to the ribbons. Just make a bean bag with sand in a zip lock baggie, tape or glue it shut, then sew it up into the rip stop nylon, which will give it strength. Next, pick your second color or rip stop nylon, the thinnest grade you can find, and cut it into a long ribbon. If you want the ribbon to last longer than a dozon or so spins, you'll prolly have to hem it along all sides....the skinner the hem, the better your ribbon will fly.

Our bean bags are 4 inches by 3.5 inches. Our ribbons are tapered, they are 3.75 inches wide where they attach to the bean bag and 1.75 inches at their ends. They are 3 feet, 5 inches long.

Our ribbons are velcroed onto the bean bags, so we can remove them to work on new difficult moves if we want to, but they also sell them perm sewn together. They look quite beautiful when spinning! Check out this web site to see pics of them to give you a better idea of what you are trying to make, yes? They're called, "Zuni's." www.mystiktoyz.com/products-poi.php

            Hope this helps!

            • OOH! OOH! Mystik Toyz... so much fun... speaking of fun Mr. Fun runs Mystik Toyz and has been having workshops at his place here in the Twin Cities on how to make various burning toys...batons, staff, palms, etc. I made my very first fire poi the other weekend. If you're in town you should look him up!!! Fun, Fun Fun!!!
